Las Vegas Marathon training

Rock n Roll Las Vegas Marathon

Registration is open for both the marathon and half-marathon training programs.  With 24 weeks remaining until race day, we have plenty of time to work together to get ready to toe the line on December 6th.

Welcome to Las Vegas in Motion

07/11 Training Run, 4:15 pace group

It was hot but fun.  Our first double-digit run is in the books, and it wasn't too bad at all.  Even though it was 91 degrees before the sun came up, sporadic cloud cover made the heat tolerable.  Here are the stats:

Time: 1:36:47
Distance: 10.01 miles
Average Pace: 9:40 min/mile
Calories Burned: 1412

As you can see, we're doing very well for this time of year.  Our pace is great.  It's likely that, as the heat increases and the runs get longer, it'll slow down a bit, but once cooler weather returns and we get accustomed to long runs, it will pick back up.  We're all doing very well.

Next week, we're going to run another ten miles, as we improve our endurance and get used to long distances.  Don't worry--before you know it we'll be touching the wall, and adding spurs to the trail.  For now, though, just be glad that things are going so well.

2010 Las Vegas in Motion

When Do We Start
For those of us planning on running the Pittman Wash trail on Sundays:
Who:     you and a few hundred of your best friends from southern Nevada
What:    training for the 2010 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon & Half-Marathon powered by Zappos.com
Where:  at the Stephanie Promenade which is a strip shopping center on the northwest corner of Stephanie and American Pacific in Henderson
When:   Sunday, May 30, 2010, 7:00 a.m.

Why:    Because every day in Las Vegas in Motion is another day in paradise

Ch-Ch-Changes
Almost everything about our program will be the same as in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.  Almost.  But we are making some noticeable changes that will help us communicate better with you.  Reluctantly, we’ve allowed ourselves to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.  To wit, we have set-up (barely) a Facebook page, and begun gathering friends.  And, we’ve established an account with Twitter, and sent one miserable tweet.  (Nevertheless, we now lay claim to being a full-blooded twit.)

Other changes involve affiliations we’ve made to introduce some local experts into the mix.  Many (most?) of you already know Dr. Nick Savatgy, Jennifer Lee, Natalie Thomas and Curt Jalani.  Fewer of you know Dr. Michael Milligan or Danny J (Johnson).

Dr. Savatgy is a chiropractor specializing in Active Release Techniques®.  He’ll be working with us throughout the program on stretching and core strengthening and will host at least one seminar on each of those topics.  Dr. Savatgy is an accomplished runner in his own right, so he knows from whence he speaks.

Jennifer Lee, in addition to having trained with us for all 5 years, is a certified nutritionist, a certified fitness nutrition coach and a certified personal trainer.  No matter what you might think of Jennifer, don’t call her uncertified.

Jennifer will be providing clinics on topics like:
-          the proper diet for endurance training
-          a balanced diet for weight loss

Like Jennifer, Curt and Natalie have trained with us every year we’ve been together.  Each of them has completed the marathon or half-marathon all 5 years.  Curt is a certified USA Track & Field coach, and now coaches the middle-distance runners at Bishop Gorman High School.  Natalie is the long-time girls' cross-country and track coach at Foothills High School.  We’ve going to call on Natalie's and Curt’s expertise in a variety of areas, none of which having to do with middle distances or high school track.

Dr. Milligan is the Medical Director/Head Physician for the UNLV Athletic Department.  We really can’t do much better than that.  Dr. Milligan will be working with us on a number of subjects including hydration, kinesiology and injury recovery.

Danny J (no last name needed) is a dynamic bundle of kinetic energy masquerading as a human being.  Physical fitness (including running) is her life, and nobody loves life more than Danny J.  She’s a certified personal trainer whose mission is to help us find a balance of activities that help us increase our overall levels of fitness with a particular focus on improving our running conditioning.

Do We Get Cool Rock ‘n’ Roll SWAG?
We’ve had quite a few discussions with the Rock ‘n’ Roll folks about ways they might support the training program.  In all honesty we really didn’t ask for much of anything.  We reckon you all have more t-shirts than you could eat in a lifetime, and one more branded water bottle might turn your cupboard into a landfill site.

This year we’re hopeful that Adam Zocks, the 2010 Race Director, will be paying us a visit at least once during the program.  Adam has suggested that he will drop in to answer questions, and talk about everything you might possibly want to know about what’s on the menu for December.  Adam has directed the Philadelphia Distance Classic, the Music City Marathon in Nashville, and of course, last year’s colossal Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas races with 27,800 entrants.

How Much, Already
We’ve struggled with the pricing issue, but we think we’ve hit on a number we can live with.  How’s about:
$  80  Las Vegas Track Club (LVTC) members
$100  non-LVTC members (includes 1-yr. membership in the Track Club)

In a break from the past, though, you’ll need to register for the marathon or half-marathon online or by mail.  If it’s easier on you (or if you’re too cheap to pay the postage), then leave your application and check with us.  We’ll batch ‘em up, and send ‘em along with love to San Diego.  But hold on off registering just yet if you haven’t already done so.  We’re expecting to have a coupon code by the end of May that will provide a nominal (but appreciated) discount.
